Unlocking Knowledge, Mastering the Digital Classroom
June 13, 2024
You have logged into your online classroom. Your screen is filled up with boxes containing classmates, and you can see your teacher attempting to keep all students engaged. Welcome to a wic online class digital classroom, where technology and education meet.
Let’s first talk about distractions. Remember when a passing notice was the biggest distraction? TikTok videos are now the norm, along with endless notifications. Disable those annoying notifications if you want to concentrate. That cat video will wait.
Let’s look at the technology. You don’t require a supercomputer for you to be able to participate. Any decent laptop will work. The internet connection is what matters the most. It’s the lifeline that will guide you through your digital journey.
Engagement in virtual settings can be tricky. It is easy to become a mere square or face in the crowd. Join discussions and participate in group activities. If your platform permits it, you can express yourself with emojis.
Ever felt that you were speaking into a vacuum during online courses? You are not the only one! Uncertainty can arise when there is no immediate response. Asking many questions is one trick. Encourage others to ask them as well. This makes the environment more interactive and keeps everyone alert.
Another feature that can make your experience or break it is the breakout rooms. These smaller group discussions allow you to have more in-depth conversations with your classmates. Think of them as mini classrooms within a larger one. Be active and respectful.
Do not forget to use the resources we have at our fingertips. You can find a wealth of resources in online libraries, education apps, and forums. Take advantage of these tools, they’re meant to make learning enjoyable and easier.
A balance between screen and non-screen time is essential. The eye strain that can result from staring at a screen for hours on end is more common than you think. You can take regular breaks with techniques like the 20-20-20 principle: every 20 minute, look 20 feet away from your monitor for atleast 20 seconds.
Virtual friendships may seem more difficult to develop online, but they are still important. You can create study groups, or chat with other students outside of class via messaging or social media apps.
Time management becomes both your best friend and worst enemy here–procrastination lurks around every corner when you’re learning from home! It’s best to create a space for studying that’s as free from distractions as possible. This physical separation will signal to your brain it is time to work.
Remember when we used to be able to walk into the office immediately after class and get quick clarifications from our teachers? The office hours have also gone digital! Use virtual office hours offered by teachers. These are great opportunities to receive guidance one-on-1 without having the need to leave home!
Fun elements can keep learning lively. Use interactive polls, gamified tests or other fun activities during lessons. This will break up monotony and reinforce the concepts you’ve learned.
Finally, and most importantly: sometimes cut yourself some slack. There are always challenges to overcome. It is not easy adapting.
Remember that next time you dial into Zoom to make a call: You have already sailed through the unknown, so continue forward in confidence. Who knows what other shores may be waiting ahead for discovery?
